Call for papers: Contemporary Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality in International Law: A Critical Seminar

Call for papers: Contemporary Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality in International Law: A Critical Seminar
Organized by:  The Faculty of Law of the University of El Rosario, Colombia, and the International and Comparative Law Program of George Washington University Law School, USA.
On October 12, 2021, we will hold the academic seminar “Contemporary Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality in International Law: A Critical Seminar”  which aims to provide an overview of the critical issues and themes that have engaged scholars analyzing international law from different feminist, queer or gendered, and human rights perspectives. It is meant to enhance a rich discussion of the critical topics and emerging issues of international law when theories, methodologies and approaches involving sex and gender jump into the scene. Thus, a criticial revision of international law history, theory and practice dealing with complex topics of gender equality, sex discrimination, multicultarism, health and religion is sought through the lenses of feminist and queer approaches. It will also be explored how gender and sexuality have advanced international law scholarship giving way to new avenues of research.
Papers analyzing from critical perspectives the theory and practice of international law regarding the inclusion of sexuality and gender in human rights cases, the role of feminist and LGBTI movements in crafting international litigation strategies are welcomed. It is also suggested to present essays discussing the link between gender, sexuality and racial discrimination, challenges in the implementation of intersectionality, and the relationship between state and non-state actors in advancing gender equality  through global public policies.
Some questions to be addressed are:
  • What critiques and current approaches by queer and feminist international legal scholars require further scrutiny?
  • How have gender and sexuality advanced international law scholarship?
  • What are the main challenges and lessons of women’s rights and LGBTI movements using international law to advance gender and sexuality issues?
  • What gendered agendas and new avenues of research in international and human rights law can be developed?
  • How can international law and the existing human rights framework be adapted to contemporary issues affecting women and LGBTI persons?
  • What can be the role of international and human rights law in advancing the rights of women and LGBTI persons in a post-COVID-19 world?
  • Which are the gaps and needs in the development of legal standards in the areas of international and human rights law after Beijing + 25?
  • How do we give content to an intersectional and ethno-racial perspective in national laws and public policies considering human rights standards?
  • Please send an abstract of 300 words to alma.beltran@urosario.edu.co and rcelorio@law.gwu.edu by April 30th of 2021. Acceptance of paper will be notified at the end of April.
  • Submission of draft for discussion in the seminar is due on August 31st, 2021.
  • Papers are expected to be published in a book in 2022 with a renowned publisher and international distribution.
